To Wash or Not - THE VAGINA!

Posted by georgekerrylife on August 26, 2012 at 6:05 AM

We just concluded our first ever cervical cancer screening outreach to DeltaState Nigeria, where we screened over 500 women and treated those in early precancer stages completely free of Charge. It was a very interesting andrewarding experience.

The women of Delta state (with special emphasis on Waffi women) arevery open, friendly argumentative but eager to learn.

One topic which came up that was of very special interest to me andvery widely practiced amongst women of Delta state was douching (washing insidethe vagina) with water, soap, dettol, and all sorts of other cleansingagents. They strongly believe that Douching keeps their vagina clean and freefrom infections.

I had a hard time convincing these bubbly, belligerent women otherwiseas many of them have practiced this culture since childhood.

More rampant in Asaba was the use of special soaps and agents totighten the muscle wall of the vagina for the benefit of their partners andspouses.

Unknown to most women washing inside the vagina stripes the vagina ofprotective bacteria and secretions opening you up to external infections anditching.

Also, the so called vagina tightening agents are toxic to the vaginalmuscles and such agents can permanently damage the vaginal walls, in extremecases even causing fistulae leading to leakage of urine and feaces

Where did this practice start from? And how can we educate women to stop this unnecessary and often harmful practice?

sexuality and reproductive health education is key to solving this unnecessary and often harmful practice. As such should form part of secondary school curriculum.
